Restrictions and limitations

Chaiz is a marketplace. What comes back from a search depends on which providers want to cover that vehicle, at that age and mileage, in that state. When none do, response.results is an empty array and errorResponse is null. That is a valid answer, not an error.

A few limits are hard, and those come back as errors instead. They are listed under how it shows up in the API.

Apart from the hard limits, everything below moves with provider appetite. Treat it as typical, not as a contract.

Vehicle

  • Hard limits: we do not quote vehicles more than 25 model years old or with more than 250,000 miles.
  • Age: within that, most plans cover vehicles up to 20 years old.
  • Mileage: most plans cover up to 200,000 miles.
  • Salvage or rebuilt title: not covered as standard. A few plans offer it as an add-on. Out of scope for integrations.
  • Exotic models and rare trims: often no provider. See what the VIN can change.

States

  • California: we do not sell there. A search with stateShortName set to CA is refused with an error.
  • Florida, Massachusetts, Missouri, Washington: thin coverage, typically one or two providers. These states have rules that keep most providers out.
  • Every other state: at least three providers for most vehicles.

EV and hybrid

  • Hybrids: most plans cover hybrid components through an add-on.
  • EVs: plans exist, but most exclude the battery. The customer has to understand that and be able to read the contract before buying. See UI Requirements.

What the VIN can change

A make, model, and year search is indicative. When the VIN is known, at checkout or because you searched by VIN, the trim, engine, and factory options are known too. A plan you showed can disappear or change price: special trims, exotic variants, or components no provider covers. The Chaiz checkout shows the customer the alternatives. Build your UI so you never promise a specific plan before the VIN is in. See Plan Search Reference.

What to show the customer

Say what happened, not what might exist elsewhere. Something like: "We could not find a plan for this vehicle in Texas. Coverage depends on the vehicle's age, mileage, and your state." Offer to check again with the exact mileage or the VIN. Do not show a plan from another state.
